How I Would Help You:
My approach to helping individuals, couples, and families, is based primarily on my knowledge of Child Development, and a blend of Family Systems Theory, Body Awareness, and Humanism.
What this means is that I believe our current struggles, or negative patterns, arise from a combination of the roles we took on as children, and our unmet human needs. In some cases, distressing events in adulthood knock us off centre; in others, we may feel as if we ‘live’ slightly off centre. Each person’s journey to emotional health is unique, and I view myself as a guide to help clients navigate unfamiliar territory.
My counselling style is extremely collaborative, non-judgmental and client-centered. I use established methods of Rogerian Reflection and Gendlin's Focusing, to help each individual in their process. Sometimes it is useful to work at a symptom level: for example, to help people learn how to manage angry outbursts. But I also encourage clients to look below the surface, to discover what is generating the negative energy that holds them back, contaminates relationships, and is simply toxic to emotional health.
I believe we all carry wounds, and I know that counselling is a highly effective ‘medicine’ that leads to healing and growth. As children, we had experiences that impacted our development. As adults, both the wounds we may carry and the coping strategies that helped us survive, may now be interfering with our personal happiness and our relationships. What I offer then, is a guided process that will help you make sense of your world and break away from hurtful and harmful patterns and behaviours. The result will be to feel better, function better, relate better, and generally experience life in more positive and
self-accepting ways.
