More About Focusing
Focusing Oriented Therapy has proven to be one of my most valuable counselling tools. It works with the body, not the thoughts, so it provides access to the festering internal wounds that cause depression, anxiety, and a host of other emotional and relational problems. I chose this approach over other body-centered modalities because of its simplicity - it gets to the heart of the matter without a lot of techniques or counsellor involvement, and it helps to heal the wounds at their source.
My clients often find the process of Focusing odd and unfamiliar at first, but as they continue to experience the genuine internal shifts brought on by attuning to their 'felt sense', their confidence with it grows, and they begin to use it as a tool in everyday life. I wouldn't want to do this work without FOT, for it not only takes the burden off the counsellor and makes the work easier, it also has a genuine, and often profound, power to heal, making my work with clients highly rewarding.
