Program Modules & Certification Requirements

MODULES
The following modules may be taken in any order, with one exception: participants must complete at least one pass of "The Art of Focusing" (or have equivalent knowledge) before proceeding to the next.  


THE ART OF FOCUSING:
1st Pass:  What is it
2nd Pass: Solidifying
3rd Pass: Competence
 
TRAUMA (including VICARIOUS TRAUMA):
1st Pass: Recognizing trauma and regression
2nd Pass: Increasing ability to keep observer present, staying in ‘the zone’
3rd Pass: Competence with managing safety, child parts
 
PRESENTING PROBLEMS:
1st Pass:  Depression, Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Anger, Grief, Addictions, Low Self-esteem, Inner Critic, Social and Relational problems
2nd Pass:  Competence working with specific presenting problems
 
*All of the 8 modules above are required for certification.  The remaining required modules are marked with an asterisk on the topics below:
 
CLIENT CHALLENGES:
*1st Pass:  What to expect, ways to navigate
2nd Pass:  Expanding experience with a variety of challenges

ADDICTION:
*1st Pass:  The special needs and interpersonal dynamics of substance and process abuse
2nd Pass:  Working with clients in addiction and the people who love them

WORKING WITH THE CHILD SELF:
*1st Pass:  Child Within, Child parts, becoming whole
2nd Pass:  Becoming more aware of childhood impact, splitting off, and reintegrating

 
INTEGRATING FOCUSING WITH FAMILY SYSTEMS THEORY:
1st Pass:  Roles, generational chain, system balance, the identified patient
2nd Pass:  Increasing familiarity
 
WORKING WITH DREAMS:
1st Pass:  From unconscious to conscious
2nd Pass:  Increasing competence
 
The total requirements for certification are as follows:
  1. The required eleven modules listed above, plus 5 optional, for a total of 16 days of workshop participation.  (Optionals may include additional passes of topics of your choice.)
  2. Session logs:
    1. 50 supervised
    2. 50 as leader
    3. 30 as focuser
  3. When all your modules are completed, I ask that you hand in a one-page summary of 'what did you hear me say'...e.g., what is FOT, why is it a valuable tool, what are you taking away from this training, etc.
Please note:  Only a portion of the session log hours will come from the workshops themselves.  Because each workshop has a practice portion, you should be able to log 16 of each (supervised, leader, and focuser) within the program.  Additional sources will be discussed in the program.

Virtually all the teaching material is presented during the 1st pass of each topic; your 3rd pass is someone else’s 1st.  But you will hear it differently and build comfort and confidence in each module as you advance.  In addition, take-home material may be provided, which you will be encouraged to peruse on your own time.
