Family Systems Theory |
This view recognizes that individuals do not exist in a vacuum: people operate within groups, or systems, that cause us to impact each other. The family itself operates as a system, and like pieces of a mobile, when one is put into motion, the other components also begin to move. There are many different theorists who have contributed to Systems Theory; I primarily follow Murray Bowen’s model. This allows me to help clients see themselves within a bigger picture: as part of a current family system, and also as part of a generational chain. As your understanding of your role in your Family of Origin grows, it allows you to see ways in which you have unconsciously developed patterns. This growing awareness can then open up possibilities for empowerment and change.
